7% DA from New Year: Mamata

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday announced the New Year gift for the government employees. Banerjee, who is on a tour of north Bengal districts, announced that the government will clear the dues of Dearness Allowance (DA).

“Despite a serious financial crunch, we will give 7 per cent DA to the government employees. I had this good news for the government employees in New Year and I wanted to announce the news in north Bengal,” said Banerjee in Siliguri after she reached here for the visit.

However, Banerjee has reiterated her stand on the central government’s policy of deducting the interest from the West Bengal government’s coffer.

“We are suffering from adequate financial crisis. The amount of revenue the state government earns is getting exhausted to pay the interest to the central government. However, we are finding ways to resist this attempt of the central government. Tomorrow, a meeting will be held in Delhi on the development issues. I am sending my Finance Minister Amit Mitra to attend the meeting and he will convey our views to the central government,” added Banerjee.

Significantly, the Trinamool-backed unions of government employees have started mounting pressure on the government to revise DA.

The unions reportedly raised demands during a meeting with the Chief Minister in August. The demand of the unions, including those owing allegiance to the Marxists as well was DA on a par with central government employees.

Mamata Banerjee held a meeting with Cooch Behar district administration. She skipped the issue on the enclave exchange though most of the enclaves are located in Cooch Behar district. “We had sought appointment to meet the CM, but got no response,” said a member of enclave exchange coordination committee panel.
