The two-day strike called by 11 central trade unions from Wednesday against the government's "inaction" on price rise and violation of labour laws will hit normal life in the north-east, as the trade unions, irrespective of party lines, have vowed to bring the region to a halt during the two-day strike.
Giving a clarion call to the people of the north-east to join the strike, all central trade unions, including the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Centre of India Trade Unions (CITU) and Bhartiya Majdoor Sangh (BMS) took out a joint rally in the city on Monday evening. The leaders of the trade unions of the leading national political parties joined hands during the rally expressing solidarity for the two day strike to achieve their common goals.
"It is a rare occasion in the northeastern states and in Assam when all trade unions affiliated to different political parties have joined hands to raise their voices for the welfare of the employees and workers engaged in the public and private sector across the country. The two-day strike will be unprecedented in the northeastern region," said Tapan Sarma, the secretary of Assam state committee of CITU.
Sarma informed that the employees of the public and private sector, including those engaged in oil, transport and banking sectors, have extended full support to the two-day strike.
The strike is likely to paralyze life in the oil-rich upper Assam districts, where 18 workers unions from oil, natural gas, tea and coal sectors have called strike on Wednesday and Thursday. INTUC leader and veteran Congressman Hiranya Bora urged the people of Assam to cooperate in the strike and demanded proper implementation of workers' rights in the state.
General secretary of the Assam state committee of AITUC, Munin Mahanta, said," We appeal to all the trade unions of Assam and the people from all caste and religion to make the two-day strike a success."
