Two-day trade unions strike to hit life, banking

While commuting woes are likely to hit the people hard, particularly in Delhi and NCR, on February 20 and 21 owing to the nationwide strike called by 11 central trade unions, the closure of banks for two consecutive days could pose innumerable problems for customers. While some of the impact of the strike might be blunted by the availability of automated teller machines and internet banking, a large percentage of people with no access to these facilities would be affected.

The strike as been called against fuel price hike, and for violation of labour laws. On Monday, trade union leaders met a four-member government committee comprising defence minister A K Antony, food and agriculture minister Sharad Pawar and labour minister Mallikarjun Kharge. Finance minister P Chidambaram was conspicuous by his absence.

After the meeting, CITU president A K Padmanabhan said, "The government has nothing to offer. We are going ahead with the strike. We expect it to be hugely successful."
